DVRs are necessary if you want to keep a record of what is happening on your site. They provide facilities such as "Registration Plate Recognition and Storage", "Vehicle Counting" or even "People Counting" and they record the video and information onto a disk so that it can be replayed at a later date. Again, DVRs and NVRs range widely in price, so it will all depend on what your requirements are.
Power over Ethernet
PoE has become very popular in the networking world. It allows you to run devices on the network from power provided by a PoE Switch. Cameras and Lights (White and Infra Red) can be installed using Cat5e cable without having to run expensive power cable to every device. The PoE Switches are slightly more expensive than standard Ethernet Switches, but the price difference is well within what you would pay for an electrician to put up power cables for each device.
